INGALLS — Police are investigating the death of a South Madison County man whose body was found in Fall Creek near County Road 650 West early Wednesday morning.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, members of the Ingalls Fire Department who were walking the creek’s banks found the body of Zachary Sanner, 23, about two hours after a dispatch call went out about a person who reportedly had fallen into the water.

The body was “entangled underwater beneath a tree,” according to a sheriff department’s report.

According to the report, the sheriff’s department and Pendleton and Lapel police departments responded to a 10:55 p.m. call Tuesday that someone had fallen into the creek.

The report states the “first arriving units were told by a juvenile resident at this location that Zachary Sanner … was acting in a suspicious manner and had seen him fall in to Fall Creek.”

Sheriff and PPD personnel started a search along the banks and Pendleton Fire Department initiated boating operations, the report states. Fishers, Anderson and Chesterfield water rescue teams later joined the search.

At about 1 a.m. Wednesday, members of the Ingalls Fire Department found Sanner’s body about 100 yards down river from the reported point of entry, according to the report.

The sheriff’s department is leading the investigation, and its report states it has conducted interviews with people who had seen or been with the victim earlier Tuesday evening.

“Although at this time, we have no reason at this point to suspect foul play, we are continuing to investigate this as an unknown cause of death,” the report states. “Autopsy to be performed later today.”

Other agencies that assisted at the scene were: Pendleton EMS; Indiana Department of Natural Rersources, and Madison County Emergency Management and the county coroner’s office.
