Pancol looks to improve his stock with recruiters

ANDERSON — The stock of Pendleton Heights’ Eli Pancol has been rising fast. After a sophomore season — in which the 6-foot-4 guard/forward scored 11.1 points per game and led the Arabians in rebounding — and a busy AAU campaign, Pancol put his talents on display at the Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic in Anderson Saturday, June 17.

Pancol scored seven points, grabbed eight rebounds and led all players with five assists to help boost the Red futures team to a 96-90 win against the White team in a matchup of some of the best freshmen and sophomores in the state.

While Arabians fans are well aware of Pancol’s diverse skill set, he was playing for a much larger audience here. With an estimated online viewership of 30,000, including more than 60 college coaches from across the country, Pancol said he hopes his performance will get some attention.

Pancol, shown here in action last year against New Palestine, is poised for a big junior year in 2017.

“It shows my athleticism and my development as a player,” he said. “It lets my name get out there more so I can go to college and get more exposure.”

Recruiting for Pancol will pick up during the coming year. He’s had preliminary contacts with a few college coaches already.

“I’ve talked on the phone with a few coaches and gotten some schedules,” he said. “This summer is the exposure, and then they come watch some school games.”

Offensively, Pancol showed off that athleticism with a soaring dunk, sank a 3-point shot, and several of his passes were highlight-reel worthy. However, he may have gained more attention with his defense Saturday, with a blocked shot and two steals, including one above the rim of an alley-oop pass. He was playing solid defense in a venue where that game aspect is left in the locker room in favor of high flying dunks and a 3-point bombardment.

“That’s part of my game, though,” he said.
