Another Richardson set to lead

INDIANAPOLIS — When winter rolls around, he will be the leading returning scorer and rebounder for the Lapel Bulldogs. This spring and summer, Luke Richardson has been working on his game, getting better and stronger, with an eye on both that team’s future as well as his own.

Richardson was invited to the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association’s Top 100 Boys for 2017 basketball showcase Wednesday, July 12, at Ben Davis High School, giving the junior a chance to display his skills for college scouts and coaches.

He didn’t waste any time showing what he can do, running the floor, grabbing rebounds, and making excellent outlet passes to start fast breaks for easy points. Overall, other than a bruised knee in the second game of the day, Richardson was pleased with the way his day turned out.

“I feel like it’s been pretty good,” he said. “I’ve gotten to play with some good players, and my coaches are good. So, it’s been a really good day.”

A strong rebounder and inside presence, the 6-foot-5 forward also has improved as an outside jumper during the past year. He said his goals for the event were to show the scouts everything he has.

“I want to work my butt off,” he said. “Just try to get seen. Some people work hard at some points, then slack off. I’m just trying to go out and work hard 100 percent of the time and just do my job.”

Richardson has enjoyed a successful AAU season, pairing up with Pendleton Heights juniors Eli Pancol and Karsten Windlan to win a pair of tournaments.

“A couple alley-oops were nice,” Richardson said. “It’s just been really fun to play with players from around my town. We’ve won some good tournaments together, so it’s been really fun.”

There will be a notable missing face from the Lapel team huddles and practices this year for Luke, and that would be his older brother Jon Ross, who will be playing at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, after a successful high school career. Luke said he will certainly miss having his brother at his side for the Bulldogs this year.

“It’s going to be very strange,” Luke said. “Jon Ross has always been there, not to push me, but guiding me to get my goals. It’s going to be really weird; it’s going to be crazy.”

Although it is early in the recruiting process for Luke, the one school that has shown significant interest has been Rollins. He likes the prospect of possibly reuniting with his older brother on the court.

“Their coach said that, if I keep working, they’ll probably offer me at some point,” Luke said.
