Lapel boys CC wins at Tipton; girls third

TIPTON–The Lapel cross country teams put a total of seven runners in the top-ten as the boys came away with a win and the girls placed a strong third at the Tipton Invitational Saturday.

Four members of the boys’ team, all sophomores except one, scored top-ten finishes with Luke Combs taking first place overall with a time of 16:09.0, over a minute and a half ahead of his nearest competitor, Bailey Scott from Cass.

Carson Huber ran in third place with a time of 17:56.8 and was followed by the lone Lapel junior as Jakob Addington finished sixth. Killian O’Connor finished 10th.

Just for good measure, another Lapel sophomore, Luke Rich, came home with a 17th place run.

Lapel scored 37 points to get the victory with Frankton placing second with 50 points.

For the girls’, three outstanding juniors finished back-to-back-to-back in the top ten.

Lauren Smith took her turn as the top Bulldog with an eighth place run in a time of 21:58.05, just 12 seconds in front of her teammate Noelle Loller. Kara Lutz rounded out the top 10, coming home just nine seconds behind Loller.

Senior Baylee Everitt was 31st and junior Sydney Rusche placed 34th for Lapel, which scored 89 points. The girls’ meet was won by Hamilton Heights with 32 points.

The Bulldogs will be in action Tuesday as they compete in the Madison County cross country meet, held at 5:15 p.m. at Pendleton Heights High School.
