Inaugural Shamrock Shuffle on tap

PENDLETON — Pendleton Family YMCA is planning a 5K walk/run that will offer something new to the community and something a little unusual among 5K events, organizers said.

The Shamrock Shuffle, which will raise funds for the YMCA, is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, Saturday, March 17, at the Pendleton Family YMCA, 520 Falls Park Drive.

The Shamrock Shuffle is a 5K walk/run for all age levels meant to celebrate spring as well as St. Patrick’s Day.

The course will travel though paths at Falls Park, weather permitting, making for a different type of run/walk, YMCA Program Director Greg Baker said.

Cost to take part in the walk/run is $30 for people who register through the end of today, Thursday, March 1, with the cost increasing to $40 from Friday, March 2, through race day.

There is no charge to people ages 5 and younger, to encourage participation. Strollers are welcome.

“We were looking to do a fun, really festive event for families,” Baker said. “The whole family can take part in this.”

Prizes will be given to the top male and female finisher in each age group taking part in the running section of the event.

Organizers also plan to acknowledge those who don outfits reflecting a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed male and female adult and child after the race.

Having people dress up in St. Patrick’s Day colors and costumes should add some fun for families, Baker said.

The weather might also be a bit chilly in mid-March, so walkers and runners are encouraged to dress accordingly, but in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, if they’d like.

The Shamrock Shuffle was created to raise money for local YMCA programs.

Proceeds from this year’s event will help area youth attend the YMCA’s summer camps this year.

Last year, the YMCA spent $25,861 to help Madison County youth attend summer camps.

The more money raised, the more children will get the chance to be part of summertime camps, Baker said.

While organizers don’t have a specific dollar amount they’d like to raise with the Shamrock Shuffle, the more people who take part the better.

Everyone who registers by the end of today will be guaranteed a race shirt; people who register after today will receive a shirt if available.
