CONNERSVILLE — It wasn’t quite the ending at regional competition Cassandra Zehr had hoped for after finishing as a sectional all-around champion, but she did achieve one of her main goals: She is heading to the IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals.

The top six place winners in each event at the Connersville Regional advance to the state finals, as do the top six place winners in the all-around competition and all gymnasts who receive the score of the sixth-place gymnast at the previous state finals meet.

Zehr, a Pendleton Heights High School junior, finished in seventh place in the all-around competition at the Connersville Regional with a score of 35.475. Two gymnasts — Taylen Lane of Columbus East and Samantha Ward of New Castle — finished just ahead of her tied for fifth with 35.550 scores.

Zehr, however, finished fourth in the floor exercise with a 9.350, good enough to qualify for state.

The all-around competition was fierce at the regional, which included competition from the Columbus East and Connersville sectionals.

Zehr finished eighth on the balance beam with a score of 9.0, 18th on the uneven bars with an 8.075 mark and 11th on the vault at 9.050.

Adison Minor, a senior from Columbus East, was the all-around winner with 38.975 points. Columbus North won the overall team regional crown with 112.175 points, and Columbus East came in second at 111.325.

State finals take place Saturday, March 10, at Worthen Arena, Ball State University, 1699 W. Bethel Ave., Muncie.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Competition is set to start at 1 p.m.
