Gallery offers variety of art classes

PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society plans art classes regularly at Gallery 119 in Pendleton:

• Drawing with Matthew — 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Matthew Blanchfield is teaching drawing classes on Sundays, Sept. 2, 9 and 16, and Oct. 7. In Session 1, students will focus on composition and design. In Session 2, learn about shading and lighting with regard to still life. In Sessions 3 and 4, use reference materials to do a personal illustration. Materials needed for the class would be drawing papers and pencil plus a kneaded eraser. The final illustration may be made with whatever material the student wants (i.e. color pencils, acrylics, watercolor, etc.). Classes cost $10 per session.

• Oil Painting With Katie Burke — 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. Katie Burke will lead her monthly class painting a hummingbird on a tiger lily. The class fee, including materials with use of brushes and paints, is $55. For those using their own paint and brushes, the cost is $45.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

Organizers seek fair vendors

PENDLETON — Pendleton Fall Creek Heritage Fair takes place Sept. 7-8 at Falls Park.

The Heritage Fair, in its 44th year, is arranged by the Century and a Half Club. The fair serves as a major fundraiser for the club, which typically clears about $6,500 from vendor fees for community causes, including high school scholarships and donations to several organizations, including police and fire departments, Pendleton Community Public Library, local parks and more.

Festivities run from 9 a.m. to dusk Sept. 7, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 8, in Falls Park.

Vendors sell a wide range of merchandise, from individually made items, such as turned wood items, jewelry and artwork, to food items, such as beef jerky.

Traditional food options include Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority chicken and noodles, Pendleton Lions Club corn and Kiwanis K Burgers.

Quilts in the Park marks 37 years

PENDLETON — Spring Valley Quilt Guild’s “Quilts in the Park” event is planned for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 6-8 and 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 9 at Pendleton Historical Museum in Falls Park.

Quilts to be entered in the show must be delivered to the museum between 1 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4. No entry fee is charged.

Quilts must have an attached fabric sleeve for hanging and must not have been previously displayed in the show.

Each participant may enter up to two quilts in each category: Bed, all techniques, hand-quilted; bed, pieced, machine-quilted; bed, appliqué, machine-quilted; wall, all techniques, machine- or hand-quilted; art, all techniques, machine- or hand-quilted; miscellan-eous quilted items; and theme “Let’s Go Crazy” items, any technique and size.

Recognition will be given on the last day of the show to the quilt receiving the most Viewer’s Choice votes.

Quilts must be claimed between 5 and 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9.

The group will not have its regular meeting in August. Regular meetings will resume in September.

Church offers night of music

MARKLEVILLE — Markleville East Christian Church will play host to The Davis Harlow Project at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, for an evening of praise through music.

The group is from the Anderson area.

There will be cookies and punch following in the lower level of the church.

Women plan abundance meal

MARKLEVILLE — Christian Women’s Fellowship “Comfort Keepers” of the East Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Markleville has scheduled its next God Abundance Meal for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the lower fellowship hall of the church.

The menu includes chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, rolls, assorted desserts and drink. A free-will offering will be accepted.

The church is located at 124 E. Main St., Markleville, and is accessible to people with disabilities.

Carryout will be available, and delivery is possible for shut-ins or small businesses in the immediate area.

The next abundance meal is set for Oct. 10.

Lapel Lions Club plans fish fry

LAPEL — The Lapel Lions Club 72nd annual all-you-can-eat fish fry is scheduled for 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, Friday, Sept. 14, and Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Lions Club building, 329 S. Main St., Lapel.

There will be entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a drawing for door prizes on Saturday.

PHHS homecoming coming up

PENDLETON — People interested in being a part of the 2018 Pendleton Heights High School Homecoming Parade should contact Cori Hunckler at [email protected] for an entry form.

Forms are due Sept. 19.

The parade is set for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.

It starts at Falls Park and ends at the Pendleton Heights football stadium.

‘Screenagers’ movie screening

PENDLETON — The documentary “Screenagers” will be shown at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the Pendleton Community Public Library, 595 E. Water St., Pendleton.

“Screenagers” is an award-winning film that probes the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles about social media, video games and academics. “Screenagers” explores the impact of screen technology on children and offers parents and families proven solutions that work.

Following the film, Stephanie Nancarrow from the Indiana State Police will lead a discussion on related topics. Nancarrow worked at the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) as a family case manager for five years, specializing in sexual abuse cases during her later years. She is now a youth educator with the Indiana State Police and ICAC Task Force educating youth on social media safety.

Jeep show set for Falls Park

PENDLETON — Indiana Jeepsters Jeep Show and Swap Meet is planned for Sept. 29 at Pendleton Falls Park.

Registration is set from 1 to 3 p.m. with awards at 5 p.m.

Awards will include Best of Show, dirtiest, best modded, best original, best modern 2000 and present, best ’90s and best CJ.

There will be food, drinks and music. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the show, and there will be a 50/50 raffle.

Entry fee is $15 on the day of the show.
