NEW CASTLE — Pendleton Heights High School varsity cheerleaders won the top spot in their division at the Indiana Cheer Championship State Finals competition at New Castle High School last weekend.

In its state title effort, the Arabians competed against some familiar foes, schools that — like Pendleton Heights — are in the Hoosier Heritage Conference.

The team competed in the Varsity B Division, in which Greenfield-Central was runner-up and New Palestine finished third.

Cheer coach Brenda Jamerson praised her team prior to the competition, calling it a unique group of students who would have to give it their all to win.

“Their hard work and dedication to the program and our school is evident, but it’s the love and support and pride they take in each other that makes them so special,” Jamerson said.

The group will never take for granted what it accomplished, winning the state’s top award because members know how much heart and soul it took from each of them to accomplish their state championship goal, she said.

“They are truly a special group of athletes,” Jamerson said.

The other divisions included Varsity A Division, with Fishers High School winning the state title; Varsity C Division with Silver Creek High School earning the state title; and Varsity D Division with Clinton Central Jr./Sr. High School coming out on top.

Carroll High School won the varsity coed state championship, while Silver Creek High School won the High School Time-Out State Championship.

The Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) played host to the state finals. IASP Department of Student Programs sponsors the Indiana Cheer Championship, a series of competitions for Indiana school cheerleaders.

The competition featured 23 high school time-out teams competing for the first time and 37 varsity cheerleading teams from around the state who reached the state finals after scoring in the top 60 percent of the preliminary contest in October at Greenfield-Central High School.
