ARCADIA — Heading into the first match of the season, Pendleton Heights High School wrestling coach Dave Cloud told his wrestling squad he expected them to win.

They didn’t let their coach down.

The Arabians came away with the first-place trophy at the Hamilton Heights Super Six wrestling match Saturday, Nov. 17.

But there was no time to rest.

Pendleton Heights was scheduled to wrestle in its first Hoosier Heritage Conference meet Wednesday, Nov. 21, against Greenfield-Central (after press time).

At the Super Six, Pendleton Heights won with 238 points. Noblesville come in second with 225, and North Central finished third with 219. The other teams competing in addition to the host were Tipton and Cascade.

The Arabians lost to Noblesville, but the Millers lost the last match of the day to Indianapolis North Central, whom Pendleton Heights beat in the first match of the day. That left all three teams with 4-1 records, with the tiebreaker points in favor of the Arabians.

Two varsity PH wrestlers — seniors Jacob Fiew and Caleb Gibson — finished the day 5-0 with unblemished records and were named Wrestlers of the Meet.

Fiew (132 pounds) finished with two pins and one forfeit, while scoring 13 and 16 points in his other victories.

Gibson (145 pounds) was outstanding, pinning all five of his opponents. Four of the pins were in the first period. His day included a fall over highly-ranked Gary Kitko of Noblesville.

Cloud said he was pleased but knows the team can do better.

“It was a decent outing for a first weekend,” Cloud said. “There are a lot of small things for the boys to work on, especially the younger wrestlers. Even small technique flaws can result in missing a scoring opportunity or allowing a score.”

Other Pendleton Heights highlights included Jacob Brown (170 pounds). He was 4-1 during the day, pinning three opponents, winning another match by decision and dropping his only lost match by a 4-2 score.

Senior Tremor Bynum (190 pounds), a returning state qualifier and highly ranked wrestler, went 4-1. All his wins were pins coming in the first period. In maybe the most anticipated match of the day, Tipton’s K.J. Roudebush, also highly touted, scored a fall over Bynum on a big first-period move.

Cade Campbell (220 pounds) went 4-1 on the day.

Last year’s surprise freshman phenom, Jared Brown, is back (126 pounds). Brown won his first match by a 10-8 score and lost a 1-point match to Noblesville senior Dalton Huffman while compiling a 4-1 record to start the season.

The Arabians’ futures team — the junior varsity — placed fourth out of 15 teams at the Yorktown Invitational. Colin Gillespie and Dylan Whistler each placed third and were named Wrestlers of the Meet by coaching staff.

Sarah Dix and Gracie Addison both won matches by fall during the tournament.

At 106 pounds, freshman Blake Nicholson was 3-2 on the day.
