WEEM wins 22 awards at national competition

PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights’ WEEM radio’s morning show is able to boast some new Fridley’s Fun Facts to local listeners after a recent national competition.

The student-run radio station brought home 22 awards at last weekend’s Intercollegiate Broadcasting System’s Golden Mic Awards in New York City.

Under the direction of Chris Green, in his third year as Pendleton Heights High School radio/TV instructor and WEEM-FM general manager, the station continues to grow in its national recognition.

The program won seven awards in 2017 and 16 awards last year.

“We have a talented group of kids that keep growing with the program,” Green said.

For the second straight year, WEEM’s “Addie and Mason In the Morning” won Best Morning Show. The program is hosted by seniors Addie Rogers and Mason Fridley. Fridley’s Fun Facts is a staple of the program, which runs weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

“We love talking, and we try to keep the ball rolling and the audience entertained,” Fridley said. “I’ve always enjoyed public speaking, and I thought (radio) would be fun.”

He described “Addie and Mason In the Morning” as a positive, energetic format that he and Rogers hope gives listeners a good start to their day.

“We wanted (the morning show) to be entertaining, and we had a lot of excitement (coming into the school year) for the show,” Rogers said.

Half of Green’s students, 14 seniors, graduated last year, so he sees great progress in the station’s accomplishments.

“(The radio/TV curriculum) has given the kids a chance to find their own lane and find out what they enjoy and can latch on to,” Green said.

There were 90 awards presented in New York City. WEEM was a finalist in 50 categories.

Along with winning on-air awards, WEEM took home top honors in production, promotion and marketing, digital and management categories.

“Part of the success and growth is once they feel like something is their own they take care of it,” Green said. “Our seniors are taking care of it and leaving their mark on it.”

In the classroom, students learn about the history of radio and writing for a radio audience before entering into audio production and on-air presentations.

The station is on air 24 hours per day, seven days per week. The students are on air live during regular school hours. For weekends, holidays and after-hours shows, programs are pre-recorded.
