PENDLETON — As part of South Madison Community School Corp.’s monthly Academic Spotlight Awards, Pendleton Heights High School students and contributors were the focus for Above and Beyond awards and Character Counts awards at the March 7 school board meeting at the Administrative Service Center.

Pendleton Heights High School Principal Connie Rickert introduced the recipients.

Students Luke Albers (fairness), Jamison Bolinger (trustworthiness), Derek Sikorski (responsibility), Megan Green (citizenship), Adrianna Rust (respect) and Gracie Criswell (caring) received Character Counts awards.

Community Hospital Anderson was recognized for its community/business partnership with the school. Tom Bannon, vice president of community engagement and chief foundation officer, and Mark Rohlfing, a registered nurse and trauma program manager, accepted the award for the hospital. Crystal Doll, an instructional assistant, was recipient of the Above and Beyond award.

“I am happy the board gave me the opportunity to showcase Pendleton Heights High School,” Rickert said. “We are an ‘A’ high school and are moving and keeping all realms in the right direction. If a student is willing to receive an education, our teachers not only deliver it 180 days but provide numerous opportunities outside of school hours to expand their horizons.”

Road project update

Bill Hutton, the school board representative on Pendleton Redevelopment Commission, gave an update on the road plans for Heritage Way Extension Phase II.

Hutton informed the board on possible travel issues during construction time over the next 12-18 months.

Construction is expected to start soon and is part of a pair of projects, including a multi-million dollar development between the town of Pendleton and the Indiana Department of Transportation that includes Heritage Way, State Street and Fall Creek Drive.

A roundabout to be added at Heritage Way and State Street intersections is part of the phase that coincides with the construction of a $14-million health and wellness center at Falls Pointe by Klipsch-Card Athletic Facilities LLC.

Retirement

The board announced the retirement of Spanish teacher Janet Miller.
