Styling at the park

PENDLETON — Iris Parker sat in the shade behind Pendleton Historical Museum on Sunday afternoon, watching as a rotation of women one by one exited the back door and promenaded across the porch.

They sported new fashions from a Greenfield boutique during the museum’s style show, one of several “Sunday on the Back Porch” community outreach events scheduled this summer.

“They’re very nice,” Parker said of the outfits afterward, noting that they were the type of clothes she’d consider buying.

The event, rescheduled from May 19 because of weather, was performed in front of a small crowd, along with frequent passersby strolling through Falls Park.

Models, aka museum volunteers, strode across the porch — oftentimes stopping to twirl or strike a pose — in new fashions from Ella June’s. Shop owner and show announcer Loretta Canter described the clothing’s design and material.

When models reached the end of the makeshift runway, they stepped down to a parking area where they posed for a picture next to a black Corvette convertible, then they disappeared through the front door of the museum for a quick wardrobe change.

Canter said style shows provide “great exposure” for the garments she finds at trade shows. They “bring in business,” she said.

The museum’s next back porch event is an ice cream social set for 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 21. Pendleton’s Yummerful will be selling ice cream and treats.

An author booksigning event is scheduled for Aug. 18.
