Tornado anniversary

Wednesday marked the one-year anniversary of the Memorial Day tornado in Pendleton. An EF-2 twister came through town at about 8 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2019, damaging hundreds of homes and uprooting trees across a six-mile stretch, starting west of Pendleton and heading northeast toward Anderson. Some events planned to commemorate the anniversary have been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but South Madison Community Foundation planned an ice cream social for Wednesday this week to celebrate the community response to the natural disaster, which included an immediate outpouring of help from volunteers as well as the formation of a Long-Term Recovery Group to help affected residents deal with the storm’s impacts.
