4-H fair activities coming up

ALEXANDRIA — South Madison County will be well represented at this year’s Madison County 4-H Fair Queen Pageant — three of the five contestants are from the area.

Lucy Mei Loller of Lapel and Olivia Williams of Anderson, both Lapel High School students, and Bailey Barnett of Ingalls, who attends Pendleton Heights High School, are in the running to serve in the royal role during the 78th annual event.

This year’s pageant is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the Farm Bureau 4-H Building at Madison County 4-H Fairgrounds in Alexandria. To meet COVID-19 guidelines, attendance will be by invitation only.

The event will be streamed live on Facebook at “madison county 4-h fair queen pageant.”

Loller and Williams are members of the Stony Creek Clover 4-H Club, while Barnett is a member of South Madison Odds and Ends.

The remaining two contestants are Lacey Mayfield of Elwood, a member of the Fur and Feather 4-H club, and Ruthie Spooner, who is homeschooled and a member of the County Mounties Horse and Pony Club.

Lisa Rinker, co-director of the pageant, said it is unusual to have such a large proportion of the queen candidates from the southern part of the county.

But it’s not the only thing that’s different this year.

Regardless of who wins this year’s contest, the queen will have help with her duties, which include presenting ribbons and awards during judged events and being an ambassador for the 4-H program.
Because of the pandemic’s impact on last year’s fair, Rinker said the 2020 Madison County 4-H Queen, Emily Betz of Frankton, will perform official duties along with the 2021 winner.
“So, we’re going to actually have two queens this year,” Rinker said.
Also as a result of the pandemic, 2019 queen Anahleisa Forrester of Yorktown also will ride along in the parade, which is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18.
The majority of this year’s fair activities take place from July 18 to 24 at Madison County 4-H Fairgrounds, 501 S. Park Ave., Alexandria.
Rinker said there are a couple of fair activities that will be open to the public outside of those dates, including the fashion revue on July 9, the by-invitation/streamed queen pageant on July 11, as well as the swine show on Saturday, July 17, and the horse and pony show on Sunday, July 25.
The fair is sponsored by Alexandria Kiwanis Club, Madison County 4-H Association, Purdue Extension-Madison County and City of Alexandria.
