Catch them if you can

PENDLETON — For two hours on Saturday, Sept. 14, scores of anglers 12 and younger participated in Pendleton Lions Club’s annual youth fishing derby at the pond in Falls Park.

“All in all, it was a great morning of fun and fishing,” event chairman Dustin Pennington wrote in an email to The Times-Post.

The Lions stocked the pond the night before the contest with 400 pounds of channel catfish.

Pennington said 60 children competed to catch as many — and the longest — fish possible.

Participants competed in two age groups: 7 and younger fished from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and 8- to 12-year-olds fished from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Boy Scout Troop 232 helped measure and record the fish caught, and trophies for most fish and longest fish were awarded to the top two children in each age group.

Two participants also caught two albino catfish delivered from the fishery, earning special cash prizes.

Two fishing poles were given away as door prizes in a drawing.

“Pendleton Lions Club would like to thank all the participants and families who came out to enjoy our derby this year,” Pennington said. “It’s our pleasure to provide events that bring pleasure to the community we serve.”

The winners were:

Most fish — Carson Webb (5) and Elijah Edgell (4)

Biggest fish — Galvin Hunt (25 inches) and Archer Hupfer (22.5 inches)

8- to 12-year-olds
