Lapel - Lapel’s girls basketball team gave one of the two favorites in the Class 2A-Sectional 40 more than it bargained Friday, Feb. 8.

Looking for their first sectional-game win since 2009, the Bulldogs fought Winchester all night and to the wire, and needed a last-second shot to extend the game.

But sophomore Kirsten Rich’s three-point try to tie did not fall, and Lapel’s season ended with a 47-44 defeat to the Falcons at Shenandoah. Propelled by a 6-0 start, Lapel finished 14-8, its best record in four years.

“I thought our kids played very well (Friday),” Lapel coach Kevin Brattain said. “I really felt like we did everything we wanted to do. Winchester (20-4, which went on to win the sectional) is a very good basketball team. We had a great opportunity at the end, but we just couldn’t get it done.”
