Lapel

One might think 50 points would be plenty good enough to win, as Lapel’s football team scored that much Friday, Oct. 25, in a first-round Class 2A Sectional 36 game.

But the Bulldogs had to contain the state’s all-time leading rusher, Elwood’s Sammy Mireles, and the rest of the explosive Panthers.

That, as well as two late bad breaks, proved to be too much for Lapel, which dropped a 58-50 decision and ended its season 3-7.

“Obviously when you score 50, you hope to win,” Lapel coach Tim Miller said. “But at the same time, with Mireles, we thought we’d have to score 50 to win.”

The Bulldogs got big output from Brady Cherry, who completed 27-of-46 passes for 339 yards and three touchdowns, as well as Joe Hart (31 carries, 236 yards, two TDs) and Bailey Partington (eight receptions, 181 yards).
