Lapel - Lapel Town Council members said they were stymied about Anderson’s move to take in acreage southeast of Lapel.

Area landowners, though, said it was a land grab intended to garner tax dollars. And they called on Lapel’s leaders to take them in, instead.

“We don’t know why Anderson needs all this ground, and why they think they need to be in the area of (County Roads) 400S and 100W is beyond me,” Lapel Council President Gary Shuck said.

The town council hosted a public forum on the issue an hour before the regularly scheduled council meeting Feb. 21. The forum came in response to a recent request by Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith to annex almost 17 square miles of land southwest of the city and four square miles to the northeast.
