Lapel - The Lapel Town Council met in executive session Feb. 20 after voting unanimously in a public meeting to continue the fight to annex 54 acres of land between Lapel and Anderson.

The 200-foot wide strip of land is at the heart of property owners’ effort to thwart a bigger annexation  by Anderson.

Mayor Kevin Smith asked the Anderson City Council in 2013 to annex an area of land west of the city between Lapel and Pendleton. Affected property owners preempted that annexation effort and instead asked Lapel to take in the smaller section of land that blocked Anderson’s plan.

Smith filed suit claiming Lapel’s move was illegal, and a Hamilton County judge appointed to oversee the Madison County case ruled in Smith’s favor Feb. 5. That left Lapel 30 days to file notice if they intended to appeal.
