Pendleton - The East Elementary School community received a shock Friday morning when long-time Principal Gayle Gernand announced her retirement on the early morning announcements.
Principal since 2001, Gernand said making the announcement to her students and staff was a difficult one.
“We just announced it this morning,” Gernand said with tears in her eyes. “It was a hard decision. I’ll miss this job; I’ll miss the kids. But there is a new phase of my life that I’m heading into.”
Gernand’s retirement was formally accepted at the South Madison Community School Corp. board meeting the night before, Thursday, April 3.
“After the (morning) announcement I went out into the hallways,” Gernand said. “All the kids started running up and started hugging me. It’s things like those hugs that I’ll miss.”
