Lapel - One person is dead after an early morning shooting just outside of Lapel early Tuesday morning.
Sheriff Ron Richardson said that officers responded to the scene a little after 3 a.m.
“The Madison County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to a call that a subject had been shot at a residence,” Richardson said.
The victim has been identified as Spencer Smith, 22, of Lapel.
Madison County Coroner Marian L. Dunnichay said it appeared Smith died of multiple gunshot wounds.
An autopsy will be conduced Wednesday.
The residence is located in the 6400 block of W. CR 300 S., which is east of Lapel and north of Pendleton.
“Upon officers arriving at the scene, they found a deceased person at the residence,” Richardson said. “A person has been taking into custody by authorities.”
Homicide suspect, Malcolm Douglas Cobb Jr., 45, of rural Anderson was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of murder.
Officers remained on the scene until 11 a.m. Tuesday.
“A search warrant was obtained for the residence,” Richardson said. “Investigators have conducted some interviews.”
In the press release sent Tuesday afternoon, Richardson said, “At this time this investigation is ongoing, as investigators continue to conduct interviews to gather more information on this case.”
