Pendleton - Alex Buck didn’t want to be reduced to being just a spectator at the IHSAA girls state track meet Friday, June 6 at Indiana University.
Despite her lower left leg wrapped in a cast and having to move around with the aid of crutches, Buck, a sophomore, chose to embrace the goings-on and cheer on, among others, Pendleton Heights freshman teammate Alli McCarty in the 3,200-meter run, a race in which Buck was also set to compete.
A day after winning the 3,200 at the Ben Davis regional, Buck found she had a fractured a bone and was ruled out of the state meet. She said she sustained the injury during the final lap of the regional, and that interrupted her plan of running state all four years at PH. She finished 17th in the 3,200 in last year’s state meet.
Buck said she was “a little bit disappointed” she couldn’t go.
“I still wanted to come here and see my teammates run,” she said. “It makes it not so bad seeing them run and I’m so proud of them. I love them seeing them run with the best.”
