High school jazz festival on tap

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Heights High School music department will play host to a jazz festival Saturday, Feb. 11, in the school auditorium and lecture hall.

Thirty-four area high school and middle school groups registered to take part in the festival, Pendleton Heights High School band director Chris Taylor said.

Events are scheduled throughout the day beginning at 8 a.m.

The University of Indianapolis band is scheduled to kick off an evening show at 7 p.m.; a school honor band showcase and the Director’s Jazz Orchestra is set to begin at 8 p.m.

Guest artist for the event is Mark Pender, a trumpeter who performs on “Conan,” Conan O’Brien late-night show.

The daytime performances are free, and the evening concert costs $6. Proceeds benefit the school band program.

The festival is one of the the band’s biggest fundraisers of the year.
