Lapel baseball advances to county semifinal

LAPEL — When a team sends 23 batters to the plate and scores 17 runs in an inning, that is usually the biggest event of that baseball game.

That is, unless your pitcher throws a no-hitter.

Senior Dustin Dowden dominated Liberty Christian in the first round of the Muller Madison County tournament Tuesday on the mound, while the offense piled up plenty of offensive support as the Bulldogs routed the Lions 20-0.

There were plenty of Liberty Christian miscues for Lapel to take advantage of. The Lions committed seven errors, threw two wild pitches, hit three batters and walked eight. The errors led to 11 unearned runs for the Bulldogs.

One run of support was all Dowden would have needed. He shut down the Lion bats, allowing no hits and just two walks while striking out 11 in his five-inning complete game, shortened by run rule. Dowden faced the minimum of 15 batters as the two walks, one picked off and the other caught stealing, were erased on the basepaths.

Offensively Lapel was led by junior Levi Frazier with three hits — including a triple and four RBI — and sophomore Seth Baugh, who also drove in four runs with a pair of doubles. Sophomore Connor Gill drove in three runs, and senior John Sherwood had two hits and scored three times.

Lapel (2-1) will host Madison-Grant at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in semifinal action.
