Lapel boys first, girls second at track three-way

GASTON — The Lapel track and field teams took part in a three-way meet at Wes-Del High School Tuesday. They came away with a team win, several individuals who won multiple events, and one broken school record.

Senior Dawson Ayers won the high jump at 5-foot-2-inches and broke the Lapel school record in winning the long jump with a leap of 21-7.5 (pictured at top) to lead the Bulldog boys to a win against Wes-Del and Liberty Christian in the team scores.

Lapel scored 66 points, while Wes-Del scored 54 and Liberty Christian 33.

Senior Hunter Loller grabbed a pair of first-place finishes in the sprint events. He won the 100-meter sprint in 11.20 seconds and the 200 in 23.55.

Freshman Luke Combs picked up a victory in the 1,600, Dalton Partington placed first in the 400, Malachi Qualls won the 300 hurdles, and the 4×800 relay team of Jakob Addington, Jesse McCurdy, Killian O’Connor and Luke Rich won the event in 9:21.00.

The girls placed second with 48 points, 15 behind Wes-Del and 18 ahead of Liberty Christian.

Noelle Loller paced the Bulldog ladies with wins in the 1,600 (5:59.00) and 800 (2:36.10); teammate Lauren Smith placed second in both events.

Vanessa Horne added a pair of wins for Lapel in the throwing events. She won shot put with a throw of 28-feet-11-inches and the discus with a distance of 77-4.

Other winners for Lapel were Kara Lutz in the 3,200 with a time of 13:25.00 and Paige Rich in the high jump after clearing 4-6.

Both Lapel track teams will hit the field Friday as part of the Madison County track championship.
