Lapel baseball delivers no-hitter knock-out to New Castle

NEW CASTLE — Seth Baugh knew he was going to be good before he ever got off the team bus Monday, May 15. He just didn’t know how good until the end of the game.
Baugh threw a no-hitter, allowing just three baserunners to the Trojans as Lapel blanked New Castle 2-0, boosting Lapel (11-5) to its sixth win in a row.
Baugh gave up a walk and hit a batter and one runner reached on an error as the sophomore fanned four. He said he felt good about his start before he stepped onto the field.
“When I was on the bus listening to tunes, I was getting pumped up,” Baugh said. “That’s when I started feeling it.”
With just four strikeouts, that left 17 batters to be retired by Baugh’s defenders. Lapel coach Matt Campbell said they were more than equal to the task, led by their junior shortstop.
“Satchell Wilson played an amazing game tonight,” Campbell said. “He had one dive in the hole and threw a guy out from his knees — one sort of a Derek Jeter throw — and two double plays up the middle.”
Baugh said the defense of players like Wilson gives him confidence to throw strikes and pitch to contact. Having senior John Sherwood — who called every pitch of the game — behind the plate helped even more.
“He is probably my favorite catcher,” Baugh said of Sherwood. “He knew what to call and at the right time — that helps a lot.”
Wilson and Sherwood each drove in a Bulldog run, staking Baugh to the 2-0 lead that he carried into the seventh. He said he was so locked in that he had no idea he had completed a no-hitter when the final out was recorded.
“I didn’t realize until the end of the game that I hadn’t (given up a hit), honestly,” he said. “Somebody brought it up at the end of the game, and I didn’t even realize it.”
Vs. Knightstown
Behind solid starting pitching and a new bullpen weapon, the Lapel Bulldogs swept the Knightstown Panthers in a doubleheader Saturday, May 13, by identical 3-2 scores, running the Lapel winning streak to five games.
Juniors Cameron Holycross and Devan Frank were the starting pitchers in the two home games, with Holycross going six innings of five-hit, two-run baseball, while Frank more than five innings, with two runs allowed and just five hits given up.
The duo combined for 14 strikeouts.
Sophomore Connor Gill, making his varsity pitching debut in the opener, pitched two shutout innings to get the win and relieved Frank with the bases loaded in the sixth of the second game, retiring the final five batters to secure the save.
Campbell said his team is heating up at the right time.
Vs. Sheridan
Lapel routed Sheridan on the road Friday, May 12, 16-0 behind the complete-game shutout pitching of Dowden. The game was shortened to five innings due to run rule.
Vs. Clinton Central
Baugh pitched six shutout innings and drove in two runs as Lapel pounded Clinton Central 9-0 Wednesday, May 10, in a game added to the schedule earlier in the day.
