Lapel tennis defeats Elwood to play Alexandria for sectional title

ANDERSON — Lapel seeks to defend their sectional championship after a 4-1 win against Elwood Thursday, may 18.

The Bulldogs face Alexandria in the title match for a second straight year; they defeated the Tigers a year ago 3-2.

The three junior singles players for Lapel were nothing short of dominant against the Panthers Thursday.

No. 1 singles player Maddie Shannon knocked off Brooke Creamer 6-4, 6-0, and Lauren Benagh routed Bri Lewellen in the No. 2 match 6-3, 6-1. Tonya Riffey completed the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Hannah Flanagan.

The Bulldogs split the doubles matches with sophomore Emily Eppert and senior Hannah Chinn winning a three-set match against Delani Sims and Claudia Swinford 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. Senior Emma Bush and junior Alyssa Whaley lost the No. 1 doubles match, also in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 5-7.
