Children’s programs planned at park

PENDLETON — Falls Park plans a series of children’s Nature Explore programs this year.

These one-hour monthly Saturday programs will take place at the Falls Park office, 460 Falls Park Drive, and be led by Program Coordinator Krysta Bozman.

Programs, which will involve crafts and opportunities to learn, will be offered to two age groups, each with its own time:

• Ages 8-10: 9 to 10 a.m.

• Ages 5-7: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Programs are scheduled for May 5, June 9, July 14, Aug. 25, Sept. 22 and Oct. 27.

Registration is limited and costs $10 per session (cash or check only). Registration forms can be obtained at the Falls Park Office, 460 Falls Park Drive, or by emailing Bozman at [email protected].

Scouting for Food collection Saturday

PENDLETON — Pendleton Boy Scout Troop 232 distributed grocery bags to homes in Pendleton and surrounding subdivisions on Saturday, April 14, as part of Boy Scouts of America’s Scouting for Food.

Residents can fill them with non-perishable food items.

Scouts will return after 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, to pick up donations left at front doors. Filled bags also can be dropped off at the Pendleton Heights Middle School lobby from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

Art group offers drawing, painting

PENDLETON — The Pendleton Artists Society has several classes planned for Gallery 119 in Pendleton:

• Kids Art Camp at PAS — Pendleton Artists Society is accepting registrations for its Kids Art Camp. The classes will take place from July 16-20 and cost $50 per child. Each additional immediate sibling is $45. Students ages 6 to 12 may register for either morning or afternoon classes. The morning class is from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon class is from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Children 13 and older may register for the 5:30 to 8 p.m. class.

The gallery is located at 119 W. State St.

Also at the gallery, the art show “About Town Pendleton” runs through April during regular gallery hours.

AU concert on tap

ANDERSON — The Anderson University Jazz Ensemble will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at York Performance Hall on campus.

It will feature jazz soloist Larry McWilliams and vocalist Katie Fultz.

McWilliams taught jazz education at Ball State University for nearly 40 years and continues to play professionally in Florida and the Midwest.

The concert is open to the public with no admission charge.

Pendleton shred day coming Saturday

PENDLETON — SecurEstate is planning a community shred day for 9 to 11 a.m. April 21 at 100 S. Main St.

Ray’s Trash will have an industrial shredding truck on site.

The event, designed as a customer service and a boost to awareness of securely disposing of documents in an environmentally friendly way, is open to the public.

There’s no limit to the amount that can be shredded.

Swim club offers classes

PENDLETON — Pendleton Swim Club is enrolling children in three sessions of Learn to Swim lessons, with the first beginning April 23.

Each session is three days per week for two weeks.

Choir to celebrate 50th anniversary

LAPEL — Lapel Show Choir is reaching out to people who have been involved with the group since it was formed in the fall of 1968.

At first the group had 18 members, was called a swing choir and rehearsed one night per week. Through the years, it became a class, changed its name to show choir and grew larger. Today the group has 46 members.

On May 12, current and former members will combine to celebrate the choir’s 50th anniversary at Lapel High School.

The day’s activities for alumni start at 9 a.m. with registration and a light breakfast. Rehearsals are scheduled at 9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., with a 15-minute break at 10:30 a.m. and lunch at noon.

A rehearsal with the current show choir is set for 1:30 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. concert.

Dinner is set for 5 p.m. (location TBD), followed by a 7 p.m. concert and 9 p.m. reception.

Director Jeannine Terhune and the steering committee are seeking the help of the community to make the celebration a special event. They are asking people to contact anyone they know who has been part of the group and ask them to sign up on Facebook or contact the choir department at the high school.

Markleville alumni plan banquet

MARKLEVILLE — The Markleville Alumni Annual Banquet is planned for Saturday, May 19, at the Pendleton Heights High School cafeteria.

Registration/social time start at 5:30 p.m., and the buffet dinner, which starts at 6:30 p.m., will be served by Home Place Catering of Greenfield.

Reservations are required and due by May 11. Reservations will not be accepted at the door.

Graduates of Markleville High School or those who attended Markleville High School and graduated from Pendleton Heights in 1970, 1971, 1972 or 1973 are invited.

Lapel Optimists golf outing is June 9

LAPEL — Optimist Golf Tournament of Champions is scheduled for June 9 at Edgewood Golf and Event Center, 519 Golf Club Road, Anderson.

The Lapel Optimist Club event — which supports local youth sports, including football, basketball and volleyball — has a 2 p.m. shotgun start.

A donation of $240 covers the cost of a foursome for a lunch buffet starting at noon, golf, carts, scoreboards and scorecards.

Hole sponsorships cost $100.

Prizes will be awarded at the end of the day.

Sheriff offers youth leadership camp

MADISON COUNTY — Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger has obtained funding to send four campers to Indiana Sheriff’s Association Youth Leadership Camps.

There are two camps offered from June 26 to 29, one at Pine Creek Camp in Pine Village in Warren County, and the other in Morgantown, at Waycross Episcopal Camp in Morgan County.

These camps are for current seventh- and eighth-grade students who want to learn about careers in law enforcement.

Campers learn about law enforcement, firearms safety, personal safety and survival, and many other topics.

Sheriffs across the state assign their deputies to be camp counselors and instructors.

People interested may pick up an application from the sheriff’s office at 720 Central Ave., Anderson.

Workshop to focus on nonprofit leadership

MADISON COUNTY — South Madison Community Foundation and Leadership Academy of Madison County are teaming this summer for a four-part workshop, “The Art and Science of Nonprofit Leadership.”

Topics such as great governance and strategies for sustainability will help employees and volunteers take their efforts from good to great, organizers said.

Leadership Academy is about community engagement and education, organizers said.

These include athletic camps for children ages 3 to 18, as well as music, dance, design, STEM and filmmaking activities for high school students.
