Lapel enters tourney on positive note

LAPEL — With a 44-23 win against Sheridan on the Blackhawks court Dec. 27, the Lapel girls basketball team sat at 9-5 going into the Madison County Tournament.

The Bulldog defense clamped down on the Sheridan offense, holding it to a 23 percent shooting average for the game, and Sheridan’s 23 points was the second-fewest points the Lapel girls have held an opponent to this season.

Kylie Rich topped the scoring with 11 points, while Morgan Knepp had 10 and Makynlee Taylor had 8.

Following the Madison County tourney — which started Monday, Dec. 31 (after press time) and runs through Friday, Jan. 4 — the Bulldogs are back in action at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8, playing host to Knightstown.

Bulldogs compete at Spartan Classic

CONNERSVILLE — Lapel wrestlers participated in two days of wrestling competition in the Spartan Classic Dec. 28-29 at Connersville.

The Bulldogs place 12th of 32 teams overall, but fourth in the small-school division.

With five wins, Harrison Hadley placed third in the 120-pound weight class. At 195, Phoenix Mills finished fourth with four wins, and Bryan Rodriguez placed eighth with four wins.

Several other Bulldogs did not place but qualified for the second day of competition and had multiple wins.

At 170 pounds, Gage Thompson had three wins, and Grant Morris (152 pounds) and Hunter Morris (220 pounds) had three wins each.

Sparky Manis (126 pounds) had two wins, and Tanner Mroz (138 pounds) had two wins. Heavyweight Cade Mohr also had two wins.

On Jan. 12, the Bulldogs play host to the Neil Muse Invitational beginning at 9 a.m.; their final home meet of the season is scheduled for Jan. 17 against Daleville.

Arabians fourth in 16-team event

CRAWFORDSVILLE — Arabians wrestlers finished fourth at the North Montgomery Holiday Duals, behind Warren Central, Hamilton Southeastern and Western.

Jared Brown (126 pounds) was a runner-up in his weight class, as was Tremor Bynum (195 pounds).

In Brown’s semifinal match, he faced 13th-ranked Seth Rohrback from West Vigo. Brown won by a fall in the third period.

Bynum was seeded second in his class, and in the finals faced the No. 5-ranked wrestler in the state, Charlie Agnew of Huntington North.

Placing third for the Arabians was Caleb Gibson (145 pounds).

Clayton Todd (182 pounds) placed fourth, Cade Campbell (220 pounds) placed fifth, while Jacob Fiew (138 pounds), Derek Sikorski (152 pounds) and Justin Stephens (285 pounds) each placed sixth.

The Arabians face Mt. Vernon Jan. 3 at Pendleton Heights. The match is also Arabian Alumni Night and will be televised in Hancock County by Ninestar cable.
