LAPEL — A dominating 83-48 win against visiting Daleville on Dec. 28 boosted the Bulldogs’ record to 7-3 with the Madison County tournament on the horizon.

The Bulldogs have one more game before the tournament begins. They play host to Guerin Catholic in a boys and girls doubleheader today, Thursday, Jan. 2.

The Golden Eagles are 9-2 and bring senior Bernie McGuiness to the floor; McGuiness is averaging nearly 22 points per game and shoots close to 50% from 3-point range.

However, the Bulldogs pack their own punch.

In the game against Daleville, senior Carson Huber could not be stopped as he scored 22 points, missing only two shots the entire game.

Coach Jimmie Howell has said his team has great shooters. Joining Huber in double figures for the game were sophomore Blake Mills with 15 and senior Kolby Bullard with 14.

In the last two games the Bulldogs have played, several players who are not starters have seen court time.

Howell said after the Lafayette Jefferson loss, he had a team where there wasn’t a huge difference between the varsity and junior varsity, and that depth will be important as the schedule heads toward the post season.

Sophomore Landon Bair and juniors Camren Sullivan and Caden Eicks all played minutes and contributed to Lapel scoring.

Seniors Bryce Carpenter and Gage White had six rebounds each, while Bair also grabbed six.

Early in the game, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and held Daleville to 9 points in the first quarter.

While the Broncos had a spark of a comeback in the second quarter, they were still down 40-23 at halftime. The Broncos couldn’t mount a true challenge in the second half either, and 26 turnovers to Lapel’s 10 played a part.

The Bulldogs shot 67% as a team from the line, an improvement versus early games this season.

In the opening game of the Madison County tourney, the Bulldogs will play Frankton beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6.

The Eagles came to Lapel for the second game of the season, falling to the Bulldogs in a close 59-57 bout.

The Eagles are 3-5, coming off a loss to Wapahani on Dec. 28.

They will not play again until the county matchup.
