ABILENE, Texas — Miller Smith of Pendleton earned a division honor and a scholarship at the 2020 National Junior Shorthorn Show and Youth Conference conducted in Abilene, Texas, from June 22 to 27.

A total of 622 animals were pre-entered and 368 junior exhibitors from across the country competed for National Champion top honors.

Judging the Owned Show was Jirl Buck of Madill, Oklahoma. There were 272 head entered in the Owned Purebred Female show, with a total of eight divisions.

Smith’s entry, CF V8 MONA LISA 935 SOL EX, was judged Grand Champion Division VI Female.

Smith was one of four students awarded the Don Longley Memorial Scholarship at the conference.

Longley was a past publisher of The Shorthorn World magazine. He followed in his father’s footsteps and continued the magazine, insisting his staff attend Shorthorn shows, sales and conferences to bring Shorthorn breeders the most accurate and expansive information of the time.

He worked to promote the breed, and his greatest delight was to publish a journalistically superior book.

Each year, four $1,000 Longley Memorial Scholarships are awarded.

The scholarships are sponsored by The Shorthorn Foundation and awarded to high school seniors or college freshmen based upon Shorthorn involvement, grades, need and participation in other activities.

Smith is the son of Neal and Jennifer Smith and plans to attend Purdue University to study animal science.
