LAPEL — An upset bid of one of the top teams in Class 2A didn’t come to fruition for the Lapel Bulldogs on Friday.

In the final home game of the season against Heritage Christian, ranked No. 5 in Class 2A by The Associated Press, Lapel hung close before the Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Heritage Christian outscored Lapel 20-6 in the final period to defeat the Bulldogs 41-19.

Lapel looks to get back on track Friday at winless Jay County.

Against Heritage Christian, sophomore running back Tyler Dollar scored on a 6-yard run in the first quarter to tie the game 7-7. It was a 14-7 Heritage Christian lead at halftime.

Dollar scored from four yards out late in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs missed the PAT, cutting the margin to 14-13. With one minute left in the third, Heritage Christian extended its lead again, scoring on a long pass play.

With nine minutes to go in the game, Lapel quarterback Brennan Stow connected with Tanner Mroz on a 9-yard touchdown pass to cut Heritage Christian’s advantage to 21-19, but the Bulldogs failed on the two-point conversion.

Heritage Christian followed with touchdowns on two long pass plays and ran an interception back for another score.

The Bulldogs fell to 5-2 overall with the loss, while the Eagles are 5-1.

Lapel takes on Jay County on the road this week. Jay County is 0-7 on the year and has been shut out three times. It has scored more than eight points in a game only one time, a 22-20 loss at Woodlan on Sept. 25. The Patriots are giving up an average of 43.3 points per game.

Lapel won last year’s meeting, 28-6. Jay County is coming off a 55-0 loss to Class 1A unbeaten South Adams.
