County councilman arrested on felony charges

MADISON COUNTY — Madison County Councilman Steve Sumner was arrested Tuesday morning on felony charges of child seduction and possession of child pornography, according to Indiana State Police.

ISP started a criminal investigation in August that found Sumner “had allegedly engaged in child seduction with a minor under the age of 16 and also possessed child pornography.”

Evidence gathered from interviews and analysis of electronic devices by the ISP’s Cyber Crimes Division was given to Madison County Prosecutor’s Office for review, after which an arrest warrant was issued.

Sumner, 52, represents council District 2, which includes Lafayette and parts of Anderson and Union townships.

Sumner was booked into Madison County Jail at at 6:17 a.m. after turning himself.
