Upset bid falls short for Arabians

MUNCIE — Pendleton Heights girls basketball led much of the contest, but Mt. Vernon went on a 17-3 run from late in the third quarter to the end of the game Tuesday to defeat the Arabians 36-32 in a quarterfinal matchup of the Class 4A Sectional 9 at Muncie Central.

The Arabians finished their season with an 11-11 record.

Mt. Vernon, which defeated the Arabians 49-38 in a regular-season game on Jan. 2 and was considered the tournament favorite, improved to 16-5 and will play Richmond (8-5) Friday at 6 p.m. in a semifinal game.

Kylie Davis, one of two Pendleton Heights seniors, had a team-best 12 points. Whitney Warfel scored seven points. Kylea Lloyd and senior Gracie Conkling had six points each. Abi Rosenkrans had one point.

Mt. Vernon was led by Lexi Shelton with 17.
