INDIANAPOLIS — Pendleton Heights senior Jared Brown had his outstanding wrestling career come to an end during the first round of Friday’s IHSAA Wrestling State Finals.

Only the second Arabian to qualify for the state meet three or more times, Brown was defeated by Oak Hill’s Blake Arthur by fall in 4:22, in a first-round match of the 138-pound weight class. Arthur went on to finish fifth.

Mason Todd, a 2012 Pendleton Heights grad, is the school’s only four-time qualifier.

Brown finished the season with a 19-5 record. He was a four-time sectional champion and, for the first time this season, won the Hoosier Heritage Conference and Pendleton Heights Regional championships.

He is a three-time Madison County champion but was unable to defend his crown this season because of injury.

“It’s been an amazing career, and I’m really proud of him,” Pendleton Heights coach Dave Cloud said. “He’s overcome a lot. He had a concussion his junior year and had to miss several weeks of competition. Then, he came back to knock off a returning state place winner to qualify for state.

“This year he had a shoulder injury and missed about a month and came back and qualified again.”

His four-year record was 119-28.

He was 28-5 at 132 in 2020 and 36-9 at 126 in 2019. As a freshman in 2018, he reached semistate in the 120-pound class, finishing with a 36-9 mark.

“He’s made his teammates better in practice,” Cloud added. “Plus, he’s got a good attitude and he’s a good kid. To top everything else, he’s a pleasant person to be around, the kind of personality you enjoy coaching.”

Cloud said Brown is looking to compete in college and has had recent visits at both the University of Indianapolis and Marian University.
