Madison County championships return this week

SOUTH MADISON COUNTY — The long wait to defend titles is over.

After missing the 2020 spring sports season because of the coronavirus pandemic, action has been a full-go in 2021.

Pendleton Heights and Lapel will now have opportunities to defend their 2019 Madison County spring sports championships.

County champions will be crowned in five of the six spring sports this week.

Baseball and softball tournaments began on Tuesday. The Nick Muller Baseball Tournament will play out Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with the championship game at Anderson’s Memorial Field set for Saturday at 7 p.m.

Softball action is Tuesday and Thursday, prior to Saturday’s championship and consolation games at Pendleton Heights High School.

The girls tennis tournament gets underway Wednesday and will continue Thursday with the final and consolation matches scheduled for Friday at various schools.

The track and field championship is set for 5 p.m. Friday at Madison-Grant.

The boys golf county championship is slated for May 8 in Anderson.

Pendleton Heights comes into the week as the last champion in four of the six sports. The Arabians hold both track and field titles. The girls have won 12 straight.

Pendleton Heights also won 2019 titles in baseball and softball. The baseball team has won nine of the 19 tournaments played. The softball program has won three straight.

Lapel will have to wait a little longer to defend its 2019 crown. The Bulldogs are the last county champion in boys golf, pulling an upset over the favored Arabians in the last battle of county foes.

Pendleton Heights was runner-up to Alexandria in the girls tennis tournament.

On Tuesday, in baseball, Lapel was scheduled to play host to Alexandria in one of three first-round games. Pendleton Heights received a bye and was slated to play at the Lapel/Alexandria winner at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Games during the week are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday’s lineup begins with the fifth place game at 1 p.m. and the third place contest at 4 p.m.

Semifinal and consolation round semis will be on Thursday with the title game, along with third and fifth place scheduled at Memorial Field.

The softball tournament was set to get underway on Tuesday with Lapel welcoming Alexandria. Pendleton Heights was scheduled to travel to Madison-Grant. Winner’s bracket and loser’s bracket semifinal games are scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at various sites. The tournament moves to Pendleton Heights on Saturday for championship, third-place, fifth-place and seventh-place games. Third and seventh place games are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. First and fifth place contests will be at noon.

Lapel and Pendleton Heights girls tennis teams begin action Wednesday. Lapel was scheduled to play host to Anderson Prep. In a rematch of the 2019 championship match, Pendleton Heights welcomed Alexandria. Semifinals are Thursday with the title and placing matches scheduled for Friday. All matches are scheduled with 5 p.m. starts.
