Bulldogs softball routs Raiders

LAPEL — With less than two weeks before the start of the softball sectional, it’s crunch time for Lapel, but a win over visiting Wapahani Monday, May 10, may help motivate the team.
The Bulldogs put away the Raiders 11-4 with winning pitcher Avery Bailey allowing just six hits against the team they will meet in the first round of sectional play beginning May 24.
She allowed four walks, two in the seventh inning, but worked her way out to secure the win.
“She’s one of the most mentally tough kids. She doesn’t get rattled. She’s the Little Engine That Could,” coach Scott Rich said.
Lapel took an early 3-1 lead after the first inning and upped it to 5-1 in the third, after a throwing error by the Raiders left Bailey safe at first and allowed Taylor Williams and Madi Carpenter to score. The Bulldogs made the score 6-1 in the fourth after Krystin Davis crossed the plate on another throwing error by the Raiders. Wapahani answered with a two-run homer by Ashland Kahalekomo in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-3.
However, when the Bulldogs came to bat in the bottom of the sixth, they scored five more runs, including a two-run blast over the left field fence by Williams. Williams had doubled in the third inning.
The Bulldogs had eight hits in the contest; Rich wants to see more consistency in his team.
“We’re still not at where we’re capable of being. Our bats still aren’t all together. We’re not hitting through the lineup like we should,” Rich said.
When some players are in a slump, others have taken up the slack, but Rich wants to see all nine firing at once.
At 10-9 for the season, Rich said the team’s record is a little deceiving.
“We’re a much better team than our record shows. We had a really rough game against Eastern Hancock on Saturday. We didn’t play nearly as well as I expected us to.”
Rich said following the 14-3 loss to the Royals, the Bulldogs had a talk.
“They reacted better today. They came with a little fire and a little passion and excitement, and it showed,” Rich said.
Lapel had six games remaining on the regular- season schedule, including hosting Anderson on May 12, at Delta on May 13 and a home doubleheader May 15 against Shenandoah.
