PH rugby teams finish second in the state

PENDLETON — In the program’s first season at the high school varsity level, Pendleton Heights High School’s rugby team finished second in the state.

In the Rugby Indiana Spring Championships held in Elkhart, the top-seeded Arabians beat No. 4 Mishawaka Marian on Monday, May 29 in one of two semi-final games.

In the title contest against second-seeded Carmel, on Wednesday, May 31, the Arabians lost 24-23 in overtime.

Carmel had a conversion at the end of the second overtime to secure the victory.

Pendleton Heights led 10-7 at halftime, Dresden Roberts had a 50-meter try and Nick Trout added the conversion. Trout also had a first-half penalty kick.

Crew Boles dove in for the final regulation try and Trout converted right before the final whistle blew to force the extra periods.

Trout had two penalty kicks in the first of two five-minute overtime periods.

Pendleton Heights Middle School team also placed second in the state.

The Lightning were defeated 39-12 by Center Grove. J.J. Kissick did the scoring for the PHMS squad.
