Brown pool offers fun in the sun

PENDLETON — Alvin D. Brown Memorial Swimming Pool was a cool place to be Sunday, June 20, as temperatures were hot and the humidity high.
“I’m from here (Pendleton) — I’ve been coming here since I was kid,” said Holly McAllister, who was sitting poolside while her children, Owen, 10, and Allie, 8, played in the water. “This is just our pool. It’s fun, and it’s close by.”

    Story continues below the photos.

There were people sunbathing and sitting in the shade, and nearly constant lines for the water slide and concessions.
“I come here a couple of times a year,” said Evan Swisher of Anderson, who wore a T-shirt draped over his head to shield himself from the blazing sun.
“We’re all from Anderson,” he said, referring to himself and a group of people returning to their towels spread out on the grass after cooling off in the water.
The pool, located at 591 E. Water St., opened for its season several weeks ago.
General pool hours are noon to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and noon to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
General admission costs $5, with people younger than 3 and 62 and older admitted without charge.
There are season passes available for $60, with discounts for the military, YMCA members, and purchasers of four or more passes.
The pool also is open for fitness swims from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Cost is $40 for season pass or $2 per session.
Water aerobics takes place 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays at a cost of $5 per session.
Swim lessons are also available for people 4 and older at a cost of $50 per week. Lessons take place 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. weekdays.
Doug Dowden of Pendleton, who was swimming with his daughter, Emma, 5, on Sunday, said he was there with a larger family group, most of whom go to the pool a couple of days per week.
“We come all the time,” he said, shortly after taking a ride down the water slide.
