Pendleton celebrates 4th at the Falls

PENDLETON — For a Fourth of July celebration, the weather was ideal. This, among other things, made for a great event in the eyes of attendees and organizers alike.
“I thought it was really nice. I like seeing the people walk by,” said Tina Uccello, who lives across the street from Pendleton Historical Museum, with a view of Falls Park, where the 4th at the Falls celebration took place Sunday afternoon and evening.
Uccello watched the event’s fireworks display from her front yard with her husband and youngest son.
“It’s just so nice seeing all the people together,” Uccello said, adding that the weight of the pandemic and political division seems to have lifted. “It’s just good seeing happy people … there’s been so much isolation.”

The event is organized by the non-profit Main Street Pendleton, which aims to promote economic development and a sense of community in town.
Sonnie Lamberson and husband Jerry attended festivities with another couple, starting first with a picnic dinner near the gazebo, where there was live music.
Lamberson said she and Jerry moved to Pendleton two years ago, and this was their first time at the event.
“It was a nice evening — there was a breeze,” she said, noting that they had staked out their fireworks viewing spot with their car before walking to the concert.
Lamberson said the fireworks and crowds were just the right size for Pendleton. And now, knowing what the park concerts are like, she said she thinks they’ll attend the Pendleton Lions Club Concerts in the Park series, too.
“It was a beautiful evening, and just the perfect evening for fireworks.”
Jack Wilson, president of Main Street Pendleton, said despite scaling back the event this year because of unknowns related to COVID-19, “we were pretty pleased” with how things turned out.
“It was a well-attended event, overall,” he said, noting that a fireworks viewing area was “covered with vehicles.
And the weather was the best it’s been in years for July 4, he said. “It was a good day.”
