LOUISVILLE — Miller Smith of Pendleton and three Hoosier teammates placed fourth in the Beef Cook-Off contest during the 2021 National Junior Shorthorn Show & Youth Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, June 21-26.
Junior Shorthorn enthusiasts from 28 states competed with their animals as well as individual, team and state contests, such as the beef cookoff.
Smith, a 2020 graduate of Pendleton Heights High School, competed as a member of team Indiana 1.
There were 18 teams in the beef cookoff. The objective in the competition is for each state group to cook the best dish using the wholesale rib cut of beef.
Judging is based on the team’s creativity, teamwork, and knowledge of the product/industry in its presentation, as well as the taste, originality and presentation of the beef product.
Besides placing in the Top 5, Indiana 1 also was the sole recipient of the Winning Recipe award.
Top recipe is judged on flavor of the food prepared.
Smith also competed in the Herdsman Quiz Bowl Contest, where his team placed fifth.
Smith attends Purdue University and studies animal science.
