PENDLETON — Though young this season, the Pendleton Heights girls soccer team is off to a promising start. The Arabians are 2-1 despite having players sidelined by COVID-19 protocols.
Coach Mark Davy said he sees promise.
“We haven’t gotten to see our full potential, but we are young and eager to compete,” he said.
Five starters return for the Arabians. They are juniors Kaitlyn Prickett at midfield, Alex Creel as a defender, Ellie Manchess as a defender and sophomores Ava Chamberlain at defender/midfield and Isabelle Phillips at midfield.
Abi Rosenkrans, Brynn Libler, Kieli Ryan and Shelby Goyer comprise the senior contingent.
One of the things Davy said that will be a strong aspect of the Arabian core is many team members are playing soccer year round, and their skill and knowledge of the game is a big plus both in practice and during matches.
In previous seasons, Davy said the wins carried a lot of weight.
“This year, winning is good, but more importantly, it will be about being a team, building a foundation and supporting each other win or lose.”
“You want winning to be the byproduct of the team atmosphere,” Davy said.
With the COVID-19 protocols again active this season, Davy said their push to get better every day include new challenges and adjustments.
“We need to get better with possessions and not force things,” he said
In their opening with Fishers Aug. 16, the Arabians dropped the match 6-0 but came back to take the win at Pike Aug. 18. Freshman Katie Coleman scored the lone goal in the 1-0 win versus the Red Devils. Goalkeeper Ryan had seven saves for the game.
On Aug. 21 at home, the Arabians exploded on the field for a 9-1 win against University. Coleman scored three, Prickett and Creel scored two apiece, and junior Charlie Cannady scored one.
Next up on the schedule is a series of road trips. On Aug. 26, the Arabians travel to Richmond. On Aug. 30, they go to Lawrence Central before beginning Hoosier Heritage Conference play Sept. 1 at Greenfield-Central.
