LAPEL — It should be no surprise that Lapel’s volleyball team is off to a strong start.
The Bulldogs are 3-1 on the season, earning wins versusover county rivals Frankton and Elwood along with Class 1A state semifinalist Cowan, a longtime state small school powerhouse.
Lapel graduated just two players from last season, two back row standouts in co-captains Avery Bailey and Madi Carpenter.
They were key losses, but this year’s team is picking up and carrying momentum from a strong 2020 campaign.
Last year’s team went 14-9 before losing to eventual Class 2A state runner-up Wapahani in Sectional 40. A lot of the losses came to very strong opponents. Including losses to Cowan and regional qualifier Madison-Grant, Lapel had three other losses to Class 4A schools.
This year’s team is a mix of vets and youngsters.
Lapel has five seniors who play a variety of positions on the court. They include middle hitter Ashlynn Allman, outside hitter/defensive specialist Emma Anderson, right side hitter Lexi Anderson, setter Emma Jackley and defensive specialist Makayla Smethers.
The remainder of the team is made up of sophomores and one freshman.
The sophomore class is Lapel’s biggest. It has seven players: Myleigh Carpenter, Sophie Jackley, Maryn Landis, Makynna Little, Lauren Paska, Elizabeth Stern and AnnaLee Stow. The lone freshman is Tatum Harper.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to play host to Madison County rival Pendleton Heights on Tuesday, Aug. 31 (after press time), the first of three games in three nights. On Wednesday, they were slated to welcome Tipton. Today (Thursday, Sept. 2), Lapel is at Tri-Central.
