Bulldogs’ boys tennis sectional title streak hits nine

ANDERSON — The storied success of the Lapel High School boys tennis team continued as the Bulldogs won their ninth consecutive sectional title Friday.
The Bulldogs swept Alexandria 5-0 on the Anderson courts after taking out Frankton 4-1 in the semifinal.
Lapel went a similar route on its way to its eighth Madison County title earlier in the season, defeating both teams in early rounds.
With their No. 1 and No. 2 singles Jacob Irwin and Isaac Bair back, as well as their No. 1 doubles team of Landon Bair and Corbin Renihan, the Bulldogs amassed a 15-4 record this season.
While Landon Bair said after their county win, they don’t want to be the team that ends the streak, Coach Justin Coomer said history is only a small part of it.
“Some of that may, but it doesn’t play into too much.”
What is really at play is the team’s determination to win, Coomer said.
“Their mindset has been on point. They really come after it,” he said. “With our top four players back, we’ve been good at developing the other guys along the way.”
The Bulldogs defeated Union City on Tuesday in the first round of the regional at Marion. Coomer had said he couldn’t find any information about the Union City team but that the unknown could be a good thing.
“We have to take care of ourselves and get off to a good start,” Coomer said prior to that match.
Lapel was to play the winner of Delta vs. Mississenewa at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
