Facial pain group meets virtually

PENDLETON — The Facial Pain Association-Trigeminal Neuralgia Support Group of Central Indiana is set to meet via Zoom at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23.

Neurosurgeon Aaron Cohen-Gadol will be the speaker. Cohen-Gadol is a professor of neurological surgery in the department of neurosurgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and a neurosurgeon at Indiana University Health. He has extensive experience with brain tumors, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and microvascular decompression surgery for hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia. His philosophy focuses on efficient and minimally invasive surgery.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a rare chronic condition of the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from the face to the brain. The condition is usually caused by damage to the mylin covering the nerve, causing misfiring of the nerve in the forehead, cheek and lower jaw. The result is intense, stabbing, electric shock-like pain, usually on one side of the face but possibly on both. There is no cure, but treatments are available that may help to lessen or even stop the pain.
