Bulldogs girls soccer falls to Greenwood Christian

Lapel — A full stand and loud student section came out to support the Lapel girls soccer team as they hosted their home opener with Greenwood Christian Academy Aug. 17.

While the Bulldogs may have lost the match 7-6, they showed their fans and opponent they were the real deal.

The Cougars, who were a sectional champion last year and returned their two leading scorers, took the early 1-0 lead.

Bulldog Krystin Davis, a stand out softball player, answered with the first of her four goals for the game with an assist by Gwyn Fisher. Greenwood again took a 2-1 lead about 20 minutes in the first half, but Davis again scores the goal from the side making it 2-2.

Greenwood puts two more in the hole, giving them a 4-2 advantage before Davis earns the hat trick going solo down the field to score. The Cougars knock one more through to have a 5-3 lead at the half.

Just minutes into the second half, GCA makes the score 6-3 and seems poised to start nailing the coffin shut with one more goal. However, freshman Sophie Goodwin gets her first goal of the season on a penalty kick. One more PK from Goodwin, and the Dogs are back in business at 7-5.

Once again Davis breathes more life into the game with her fourth goal of the game, making the score 7-6 with just over three minutes to play. A final opportunity to tie the game falls short in the final seconds.

Coach Chad Soden said that despite their inexperience, the Bulldogs are loaded with athletes and fueled by the excitement generated at school and in the community for their new venture. “Better than I imagined. We can’t go anywhere in town without hearing about it. It’s been emotional for them. We were out there ready to start the game, and it was almost surreal.”

Soden is happy with their progress but knows getting better each day is vital for the program.

Davis was all smiles after the game. In two games, she has scored six of Lapel’s eight goals. She’s also never played the game. “I never really thought about playing soccer, but once the opportunity came I thought I’d try it.”

The Bulldogs fell to 10th ranked Tipton Aug. 15.

With two of possibly their toughest games behind them, Lapel hosts Anderson Aug. 23 and travels to Wapahani Aug. 25.
