PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights boys soccer snagged its first win of the season in its home opener against visiting Burris Laboratory on Monday, Aug. 22

Kam Kail led the team with two goals in the 3-2 win. Kail’s first goal came just minutes into the game. He picked up the second at 20:56 in the second half.

A free kick awarded to Cole Bubalo was perfect through the goal four minutes earlier.

“That was one of the prettiest shots we’ve seen in a while,” coach Kyle Davy said.

Bubalo and Jack Weflen were credited with two assists in the game.

“I’m proud of the guys for sticking with it tonight,” Davy said.

He said the Burris team was a much-improved squad from last season and didn’t make the win easy as neither team controlled the field.

Burris brought a physical team this year.

“I think they’ve had a couple of good early matches and brought some energy tonight. They definitely gave us a good contest. They were not that physical last year,” Davy said. “No. 10 (Bryce Karnes) gave us some fits. He’s a good physical player.”

Goalie Alex Begley was key to the win as well with five saves for the night.

In its opening match of the year, Pendleton Heights lost 3-2 to the Huskies of Hamilton Heights Aug. 18. In that match, Weflen and Kail scored for the Arabians.

“That loss was a little disappointing,” Davy said.

In previous seasons, the team has figured out their starting lineup early, Davy said, but this time, with the depth of the team, they are still working to find the best combination.

The Arabians are 1-1 and travel to Hamilton Southeastern today, Thursday, Aug. 25.
