Highway 38 sale starts Friday
PENDLETON — The annual Highway 38 Sale — which features rummage sales along the route and on nearby side streets — is scheduled for Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6.
The sale route stretches from Noblesville to New Castle, passing through Pendleton.
“Our local businesses located along Highway 38 are excited to see all the shoppers come out!” Pendleton Business Association said in a social media post.
The event is also being promoted with a banner across State Street (State Road 38) in downtown Pendleton.
Artists society plans art show, classes
Pendleton Artists Society plans its Spring Art Show at the gallery from May 5 to 31 at Gallery 119.
The public is invited to a first Friday event from 6-8:30 p.m. May 5 for viewing the art, meeting artists and hors d’oeuvres. Judge for the event is David Franklin. Awards for winners are as follows: First Place — $70, Second Place — $40, Third Place — $30 and People’s Choice — $20.
Viewing will continue through May 31 during regular business hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m Tuesdays through Saturdays.
The gallery is located at 119 W. State St., Pendleton.
The show is sponsored by 3Rivers Credit Union.
The artists society also offers art classes, including:
Monday Hybrid Beginning Oil Painting with Jeannette Pomeroy-Parssi, 1-3 p.m May 1, 8, 15 and 22.
An introductory class that includes color mixing, tonal value painting of a white still life and a complementary color painting. Cost $100. A needed supply list will be sent upon registration.
Monday Hybrid Oil Painting with Jeannette Pomeroy-Parssi, 3-5 p.m. May 1, 8, 15 and 22. For creative people with some previous painting experience, this class provides nurturing instruction and guidance. Pomeroy-Parssi will offer guidance as participants paint and explore her lessons and assignments from week to week. She will provide tips and support for projects if people want to bring them to class. Cost is $100. A needed supply list will be sent upon registration.
Spring Hybrid Thursday Afternoon Drawing with Jeannette Pomeroy-Parssi, 1-3 p.m. May 4, 11, 18 and 25. A drawing class for adult artists at all skill levels, basic to advanced. Cost is $100.
Pottery with Janae Ledbetter — 3:30-5:30 p.m. (or 6-8 p.m.) May 23, 30, and June 6, 13. This class is for people 12 and older, no experience needed. Three classes to create using pottery techniques and an additional class to glaze. Cost is $120, supplies included.
Children’s Art Classes take place on the second Saturday each month. Classes are taught by a variety of teachers. Each class is independent and will need its own registration.
Kids Class: A Mother’s Day Surprise with Pam Rowley — 9:30-11:30 a.m. May 13. Participants will make a deco clay (an air dry, lightweight clay) sunflower and paint a flower pot. Cost is $10.

PAS registering for art camp
PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society (PAS) at Gallery 119 is accepting registrations for Kids Art Camp for July 10-14.
The theme this year is “Art Sparks Imagination.”
Artists will teach children through age-appropriate art work, culminating in an open house to show off participant art on Friday, July 14.
Morning sessions (9 to 11:30 a.m.) or afternoon sessions (12:30 to 3 p.m.) are available Monday to Friday for ages 6-12.
Ages 12 and up will meet from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Register at the gallery, 119 W. State St., Pendleton or at 765-778-0986 during regular business hours, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
Classes are limited.
Garden club plant sale Saturday
PENDLETON — Pendleton Garden Club is having its annual plant sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, beside the Community Building in Falls Park.
Funds raised go toward gardening education programs.
The club’s next meeting is set for 6 p.m. May 15 in the Community Building.
High, middle schools offer Jazz Café
PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights Jazz Café, featuring performances by middle and high school music groups, is set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Pendleton Heights Middle School.
Featured performers include the middle school Jazz Band and Jazz Express and high school Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble.
Tickets cost $4.
Food will be available for purchase from Big Poppa’s Pork Pit, Greek’s Pizzeria and Ohanalulu.
Legion plans elections, activities
PENDLETON — Nominations for American Legion Post 117’s fiscal year 2024 board run through 6 p.m. May 16.
Elections will be 6 to 8 p.m. May 23. The installment of officers will take place at 6 p.m. June 13.
Fiscal year 2024 begins July 1, 2023.
To nominate, vote or hold office, a person must be a member of the post.
The post is located at 611 W. State St., Pendleton.
The post also plans the following events — open to members and non-members.

LHS variety show set for Saturday
LAPEL — Lapel High School plans two school year-end concerts in May.
All high school music groups will present their annual Variety Show at 7 p.m. May 6 in the auditorium.
Choir, Show Choir, Band and Jazz Band will perform a range of musical selections, from “A Million Dreams” to “Men in Tights,” and some audience participation songs.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. There is no admission charge, but organizers suggest a donation of $5.
Two weeks later, at 7 p.m. May 20, Lapel Show Choir will present its last performance of the year.
The show is titled “We’ve Come to Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance!” and will include group numbers, and solos from current and former show choir members.
During the evening new members for next year will be introduced.
There will include a reception following the show to honor the seniors.
Town looks for flower power
PENDLETON — South Madison Community Foundation seeks volunteers to help plant flower pots and planter boxes along State Street in Pendleton.
The town has purchased 32 new flowerpots and six planter boxes to be placed beside the light poles from Main Street to Broadway.
Planting will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 16.
All planting materials and hands-on instruction will be provided for the one-day “plantathon,” and volunteers who sign up to water will be provided with watering jugs and fertilizer.
People are also needed to assist with watering throughout the season.

Talks explore county’s history
ANDERSON — Madison County Historical Society Inc. offers a series of “First Sunday” presentations covering the History of Madison County, set for 2 p.m. monthly in the Bowman Room at Museum of Madison County History, 11 W. 11th St., Anderson.
Madison County Historian Stephen T. Jackson delivers the presentations, which provide an overview of Madison County’s history through historical highlights.
Presentations run about an hour each and are free.
Following the presentation, at about 3 p.m., Jackson will sign his book “Historic Events in a County Called Madison: The 20th Century.” This book and others will be available to purchase.

Garden group plans plant, rummage sale
ALEXANDRIA — Madison County Master Gardener Plant and Rummage Sale is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Madison County 4-H Farm Bureau Building, 512 E. Fourth St., Alexandria.
Items for sale will include gloves, soil knives, beneficial insect and pollinator seeds, kokedeamas, lily bulbs, hostas, vegetables and a variety of perenials and annual plants.
Master Gardeners will be available to answer questions.
Church group plans abundance meal
MARKLEVILLE — Christian Women’s Fellowship “Comfort Keepers” of East Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 124 E. Main St. in Markleville (East State Road 38), plans its monthly “God Abundance Meal” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, in the lower fellowship hall of the church.
Menu will be chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, assorted desserts and drink.
Dine in or carry out.
The facility is accessible to people with disabilities.
The next monthly meal is set for June 14.
Town to conduct meeting on growth
PENDLETON — The Town of Pendleton plans a meeting about growth at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Town Hall.
It will be a public session for input on growth and quality of life.
A Zoom link will be available for the meeting, with information posted on the town’s website calendar.
The town conducted previous meetings on Pendleton’s present and projected growth, and the plans the town has put in place to address it.
Psi Phi purse auction coming up
MARKLEVILLE — Psi Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi Sorority in Markleville plans a purse auction at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 25, at North Christian Church, 32 State St., Markleville.
A portion of the proceeds will help the chapter support military veteran organizations.
Psi Phi’s personal and entertaining auctioneer, Tim Looper, will auction new and gently used purses filled with all sorts of surprises.
Purses can be previewed at 6 p.m. (no touching), with the auction starting at 6:30. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
Class of 1978 reunion planned
PENDLETON — Pendleton Heights High School Class of 1978 is planning its 45th reunion for Sept. 16.
