PENDLETON — Spring Valley Quilt Guild’s 42nd annual Quilts in the Park show took place Thursday through Sunday at Pendleton Historical Museum in Falls Park.
“It was a good show,” organizer Suzie Pierce said.
She said 95 quilts were entered in the show and on display, along with an additional 10 by Corene Kuklenski, recipient of the guild’s 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award.
The judge for this year’s show was Jennifer Fulton of Indianapolis, Pierce said.
Fulton determined first-, second- and third-place awards in 12 categories, along with a single Judge’s Choice Award and a single award for best new quilter.
“All the judging is done impartially. The judge never sees the name of anything of the person entering the quilt,” Pierce said.
About 280 people visited the show and were able to cast ballots for Viewers’ Choice Awards, with ribbons going to the top three vote-getters.
Winners receive ribbons, which Pierce said are highly desired by show competitors.
“Those ribbons are pretty special,” she said. “They are handmade by Peggy Sanqunetti — she makes them and donates them every year for us. They’re always unique, and everybody wants to win one.”
Pierce said she was surprised her entries garnered eight showings.
“I won eight ribbons,” she said. “It just must have been my lucky day.”
The quilt show is an annual fundraiser for the museum.
A $5 entry fee to the show raised about $1,400 this year, and a quilt raffle generated the same amount after expenses.
Pierce said the guild will find some additional funds internally to make the donation an even amount.
“Last year we gave them $3,000, so we’ll probably give them $3,000 again this year,” she said.
