PENDLETON — After a couple of recent local town conventions, races on the ballot for the November General Election have firmed up.
Shane Davis defeated Tom Alley and Mike Romack to be the Republican candidate for the Pendleton Town Council District 5 at-large seat.
According to Madison County Republican Chairman Russ Willis, Davis received 34 of the 71 votes cast during the convention, which took place Aug. 14 at Pendleton Heights Middle School.
Romack received 26 votes, and Alley garnered 11.
Davis will face Democrat Lisa A. Floyd in November.
Davis was appointed to the council in the spring by a 5-1 vote during a Republican caucus. He was appointed to serve out the term of Councilman Chad Wolfe, who resigned after moving out of town. There were four candidates for the spot.
Davis, a 1998 Pendleton Heights High School graduate, said at the time he wants to serve because he believes he can make a positive difference. With less than a year left in Wolfe’s term, Davis said he intended to run in November’s election.
Davis caused a stir at the August council meeting, during which he made a motion to reinstate Pendleton Police Officer Marc Farrer as police chief. The motion passed, reversing a protracted town disciplinary case against Farrer just prior to Davis joining the council; the case centered on controversial social media posts and had resulted in Farrer’s demotion.
Davis is married to wife Melissa — who is from the same high school graduating class — and has two children.
On Aug. 12, one Republican incumbent lost her bid to remain on Lapel Town Council in a five-way race for three at-large candidate spots.
Councilman Jason Kleinbub and newcomers Chad Blake and Teresa Retherford received the most votes at a town convention at Lapel High School.
Sixty-one voters cast ballots. They could vote for up to three candidates. Kleinbub received 43 votes, Blake received 41 votes and Retherford received 34 votes.
Incumbent Councilwoman Deb Wainscott and newcomer Stephanie Evelo did not move on, receiving 25 and 23 votes, respectively.
No challengers filed to face the three Republican candidates in the fall, meaning in all likelihood Kleinbub, Blake and Retherford will be sworn in, Willis said.
“It’s a done deal,” he said.
